Why is this project happening?

Back in 2015, in response to a lack of open space in the area, we established a small neighbourhood park. It was always envisaged we would later extend it. That’s what we are looking at now. Expanding the park will increase the area available to the community for outdoor activity, rest and relaxation.

Council has received requests from community member to expand the space, in keeping with Council resolutions from 2015.

While the existing park provides for some activities, the expansion will offer a greater variety of facilities and cater to more diverse park users.

Why is there not more green space in the plan for Stage 2?

The site is a former Council depot site. Due to this past use there are some environmental matters that need to be managed which is why we are currently retaining much of the paved surface.
We would hope to be able to establish a larger permanent park here in the future after the eventual relocation of the Footscray Hospital. We would talk more with the community about that at that time.

What is happening at Berbert Park?

Council is responding to community feedback to extend Berbert Park by 1000sqm, converting the adjacent car park into a play space.

What will the expanded section of Berbert Park include?

The community will decide what will be included from a choice of new play equipment, greenery and seating as listed in the feedback survey. While the existing park provides for some activities, the expansion will offer a greater variety of facilities and cater to various park users.

Why was the adjacent car park selected for the park expansion?

Berbert Park is located in a neighbourhood with a lack of open space. The expansion will increase the area available to the community for outdoor activity, rest and relaxation. The adjoining car park to Berbert Park will be temporarily converted into open space.

Why will the Berbert Park expansion be temporary?

The expansion is temporary as there are longer term plans to establish a larger permanent park at the site after the New Footscray Hospital is established, the new Footscray Hospital is expected to open in 2025.
