The streets of central, Footscray could be improved so the centre feels more vibrant, welcoming and enjoyable for people walking around.

One of central Footscray’s natural strengths is its unique structure of gridded small street blocks, laneways and pedestrian plazas. Council can strengthen these by creating wider footpaths, more places to stop and rest and improve lighting. More outdoor dining on streets would also bring more activity throughout the day and night.

Creation of a new pedestrian friendly plaza along Hopkins Street would invite more people and families to enjoy the heart of Footscray, while slower vehicle speeds would help streets feel safer to stroll and linger.

The rules for the design of new buildings can also be updated to make sure streets and open spaces stay sunny throughout the year.

Together, these steps can help small businesses and a buzzing street life in central Footscray.
