There is an opportunity to transform Footscray into a more inviting place with high quality streets and transport infrastructure.
Currently, Footscray is one of the busiest transport hubs in Melbourne, with nearly 50 percent of trips to Footscray made by public transport. The new Metro Tunnel and upcoming upgrade to the No. 82 Tram route will make Footscray an even more important and busier hub.
An improved arrival experience at the Footscray Station through a new Transport interchange in Irving Street will be an important part of people’s experience of the centre. The look, feel, and sense of safety around the station and Footscray Market could be improved through upgrade of the station forecourt and the surrounding streets.
The pedestrian environment can also be improved by consolidating car parking on Council owned land at the edges of the centre. This would free up land in the core of Footscray for other uses that benefit the community and bring more activity into the core.
Upgrading cycling infrastructure will make it easier to access the centre and way-finding signage will help people to navigate, explore and shop in Footscray.
