Maribyrnong City Council has a strong commitment towards inclusion and equality and takes pride in our diverse community, including our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and questioning, and asexual (LGBTIQA+) people, families, and communities.

We're currently working on the development of a Strategy and Action Plan, with the newly appointed LGBTIQA+ Advisory Group, to understand how Council can help strengthen social and economic inclusion and reduce barriers to the participation of our diverse gender community in our City.

Our initial community conversation

We started the conversation in late 2021.

210 residents engaged through workshops and surveys to provide some initial thinking that has resulted in the creation of a draft working document we are keen for further feedback on. You can read it here.

Some of the things we heard during this initial engagement included:

  • Diversity and community attitudes are the most positive thing that supports LGBTIQA+ people and their families in Maribyrnong
  • Council support, events and facilities received the second highest ranking of positive things
  • The least positive thing that could be improved to better support LGBTIQA+ people and their families was the need for more inclusive support services and businesses.
  • In line with the identification of a lack of inclusive support services and businesses (as the area that could be most approved), you would also like more inclusive support services and businesses.

You also told us:

  • Maribyrnong is a diverse, welcoming, and inclusive community
  • It has a vibrant venue, pub, and club culture
  • There are a growing number of locally accessible groups, clubs, online networks, accessible health services and sporting clubs.
  • Council's work to support and acknowledge LGBTIQA+ people, families and communities is also recognised - including its policy work, support for business, youth services, libraries, family supports, and recreational opportunities, among other things - but it could potentially do more.

A summary report is available here.

Let's keep talking

The draft working document, with your feedback, will inform the development of the draft Maribyrnong LGBTIQA+ Strategy and Action Plan 2021-2025.

We’re wanting to sense check the vision and principles in the draft with you to ensure they accurately reflect what you told us.
