The design moves through time starting with the major periods of Vietnamese history. It includes the Vietnam war era where major refugee camps are represented. The ocean in the background symbolises travel to reach Australia where we see a safe and welcoming hand. The design ends with the future where birds represent the settlement of the Vietnamese community.
Throughout the artwork are many references to cultural icons including traditional drums, classic vietnamese architecture and iconic flora of Vietnam, particularly bamboo.
The design is also structured to represent the three main regions south, central and north Vietnam, with traditional dress and flora of the regions depicted in each section.
