Background

Following the passing of former Mayor and Councillor Sarah Carter on 6 August 2024, Council is seeking to commemorate her significant contributions to our community.

Sarah Carter was a dedicated leader and advocate who served on Council from 2007 to 2024, including three terms as Mayor (2011, 2020 and 2023). Sarah Carter was the first emeritus (three-term) female Mayor in the municipality’s 163 year history and played a key role in a large number of community projects including:

  • championing gender equity as the Council’s first gender equity ambassador, serving on the board of Gender Equity Victoria, and leading initiatives such as the Fair Access Policy and Towards Gender Equity 2030 Strategy
  • advocating for early childhood services, including the redevelopment of the kindergarten at the Maribyrnong Community Centre
  • revitalising Footscray Wharf and securing cultural investment in the local arts sector
  • securing funding for long-term investment in local sport and recreation.

To recognise her contributions to the City of Maribyrnong, Council is proposing to name the newly developed kindergarten at Maribyrnong Community Centre, 9 Randall Street, the ‘Sarah Carter Kindergarten’.

As per the Naming rules for places in Victoria – 2022 (Naming Rules), which provide principles for naming, and with the support of both Sarah’s family and Geographic Names Victoria, Council is seeking feedback on the proposed name for the new Kindergarten.

You can share your feedback below by completing the short survey.

Feedback closes midnight 6 June 2025.
