Welcome to the Sustainability Learnings Portal

This information hub provides resources and tools to help you understand the environmental challenges facing our municipality. It explores the impacts of our warming planet and ways we can come together to restore a safe climate and a sustainable City.

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, caused by human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels.

But what does this really mean for you and our local community?

Sometimes it can be difficult to recognise how climate change impacts our day to day because the effects are so long-term. Here in Maribyrnong, like the rest of Australia, we’re already experiencing these climate-related impacts – from the 2021 storms that devastated our Municipality to sweltering heatwaves that often continue on from summer well into autumn.

We know that for many people solutions may feel out of the reach, and the idea itself can be overwhelming.

"I am scared about what my future will hold, how safe we will be, what the flow-on effects of a global emergency on a large scale will be." – Maribyrnong resident.

We are here to listen to the voices of our community and provide resources to help you to understand the climate emergency and local impacts – and the ways you can take action yourself to help bring about change. While Council is working on the things it can do to address the impacts from rising temperatures and prevent long-term damage, understanding how climate change impacts our community is a great place to start.

The more we know, the more we can do to mitigate the effects and create a healthier, greener Maribyrnong.
