Draft Yarraville Oval Master Plan

Changes to the Oval

The draft Master Plan has been informed by community feedback and includes:

  • new and improved paths around the Oval and to Yarraville West Primary School
  • more trees, shade and planting around the reserve
  • the existing skate park retained and upgraded
  • public toilets included as part of a pavilion upgrade
  • reduced mounds to create more open space
  • key buildings retained and restored, including the grandstand, scorer’s box and Mouth Organ Band Hall.

Cricket practice facility

The development of the Master Plan was to identify the preferred location and design of a cricket training facility.

The proposed nets will not be a traditional fixed net system, but rather netting curtains between wickets. This will allow the space to be opened for school, sporting, and community use beyond traditional cricket use.

Five locations at the reserve were considered:

  • Option 1: northwest corner – not considered suitable.
  • Option 2: northeast corner – not considered suitable.
  • Option 3: eastern edge adjacent to the former toilet block – not preferred.
  • Option 4: south of the existing turf wicket practice nets – preferred option.
  • Option 5: area between the band hall and the pavilion – not considered suitable.

An alternative option for the cricket club to undertake all training at McIvor Reserve was not preferred.

All options are outlined in the 19 May Council report.

How we got here

The master planning process helped us decide how the Reserve can be used now and in the future.

It looked at the needs of local sporting clubs, community groups and the wider community, while keeping the Oval as an active sports space.

Because the site is landlocked, the focus is on making better use of the existing space.
