Consultation has concluded

The City of Maribyrnong has a longstanding commitment to welcoming and recognising our First Nations people. The Council Plan 2017 – 2021 committed to facilitate the development of Maribyrnong as an ‘intercultural city’ with ‘tools to manage diversity, cultural conflict, recognise/reconcile the First Peoples. The best available tool to recognise/reconcile with our First Nations peoples was to establish a formal Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) that is endorsed by Reconciliation Australia.

Our vision for reconciliation

Maribyrnong City Council’s vision for reconciliation involves encompassing the entire Maribyrnong community positively to engage and celebrate the histories and cultures of our Traditional Custodians, the Wurundjeri Woi wurrung and Boon wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation, and all First Nations peoples of our community. Council values maintaining its constructive and honest relationships with its local First Nations peoples and their Elders.

Maribyrnong City Council has a Maribyrnong Reconciliation Action Plan Advisory Committee (MRAPAC) to provide guidance and support to the Council on issues and barriers that affect the Reconciliation process.

Working alongside local leaders, a Councillor and key Council staff, members assist in providing advice to Council on the development and implementation of strategies that deliver positive outcomes and which are aligned to the Council Plan, and the Reconciliation Action Plans.

The committee comprise up to 12 representatives, consisting of at least 50% First Nations community members, a Maribyrnong City Council Councillor, senior staff and officers of Council, community service providers and other stakeholders who have a significant role in supporting First Nations communities within the City of Maribyrnong.

We are seeking community comment on our first recognised Reconciliation Action Plan. The Plan will be implemented over the next two years.
