We have heard the value our community places on open space. During our first community conversation, the loss of significant open space was the primary reason for opposition to a potential indoor sports facility. It was also the most common reason for those yet to form a view - they wanted to know the impact on open space before they made a call.

Appreciating the importance of open space, the preferred northern site identified on the draft Master Plan also incorporates a number of proposed measures to mitigate and offset any impacts including:

  • Taking space currently occupied by car parking
  • Preserving the current fenced dog park, with a reduction in size of 0.2ha, from 0.63ha to 0.43ha
  • Creating a new 0.44ha fenced dog park at the north-east corner of the Reserve
  • Avoiding the removal of (some) of the Reserve’s mature trees
  • Ensuring no net loss of trees. Along with replacing any removed, an additional 30 trees would be planted. Where possible, healthy trees to be removed would be relocated.
  • Increasing vegetation throughout the Reserve through planter boxes and ground cover planting where appropriate

An arboriculture assessment of the site would be needed to determine the retention value of the trees proposed for removal before a Master Plan is adopted. This Report would include information on which trees would be removed or relocated as a result of any approved changes and consider replacement species, maturity and location.

Be lovely if council can build & maintain a large empty field at the bottom of my garden, but for the community, should build a stadium

The destruction of so many trees and so much animal habitat will have a lasting adverse effect on our park. #SaveMcIvor #BuildOnBrown

You declared a climate emergency in 2019, and have seemed to disregard the topic since. Keep all trees and #savemcivor

Sacrificing well-used open green space for a stadium that can most certainly be built elsewhere more suitable makes zero sense. NO STADIUM!

Can Council explain how we meet the objectives of the open space strategy when you keep proposing to turn open space into stadiums?

Engagement Summary: Ignore concerns about loss of open space & council's own open space strategy that shows a severe shortage of open space

There is no debate here. Everyone wants a stadium, the basketballers just want it at the expense of everyone else. Green the reserve.
